Hi! I’m Michaela,
I’m a journalist who graduated from Auburn University in May 2025 with a B.A. in Journalism and a minor in Political Science. I’ve reported both freelance and full-time for publications across Eastern Alabama, covering Lee, Chambers, Tallapoosa, Macon and Russell counties.
My work has appeared in The Auburn Plainsman, The Observer, The Lafayette Sun, and LiveLee Magazine, where I covered breaking news, local government and community events. Reporting in Eastern Alabama gave me hands-on experience with engaging diverse communities and telling stories that reflect how people live, work and connect.
I began my academic career in pre-med at Jefferson State Community College in Birmingham before discovering how journalism intertwines with sociology and public affairs. That shift sharpened my interest in how policy, politics and social systems affect everyday life, and how strong reporting can help make those connections clear.
As Lead News Editor and a campus and community reporter for The Auburn Plainsman, I strengthened my reporting, editing and storytelling skills in fast-paced newsroom environments. I’m excited to bring my curiosity, versatility and community-focused reporting to a newsroom in Birmingham and the surrounding area.
